Bio

I was born and raised in Evansville, Indiana, where I graduated from Benjamin Bosse High School in 2003. I received my B.S. in Chemistry from Ball State University in December 2006. During my time at Ball State, I worked in the research group of Dr. James Poole, and studied the kinetics and photochemistry of azidopyridine-N-oxide molecules. I am currently a fifth-year graduate student in the McCall lab. I'm married and have two children, both boys.

Current Research

My research in the McCall lab has been centered around developing components of the SCRIBES instrument. My first project was working with Andrew Mills to construct the difference frequency generation laser (DFG) that will be used with SCRIBES to acquire vibrational spectra of molecular ions. This laser was then used to characterize a pulsed supersonic expansion source used to determine the dissociative recombination rate of H3+.

After working with the difference frequency laser, I began developing a continuous supersonic expansion discharge source for the SCRIBES experiment. This source has proven to be a reliable source of ions; having operated in excess of 200 hours without failure. To characterize the source, I built a second DFG as well as a new cavity ringdown spectrometer. The DFG consists of a MgO-doped periodicallly-poled LiNbO3 crystal pumped by a 532 nm Nd:YVO4 laser and a tunable cw dye laser, and it is capable of producing cw single-frequency light from 2.2-4.8 μm. I have used this laser together with the cavity ringdown spectrometer to measure the rotational temperature of H3+ ions in order to determine the cooling performance of the source.

Since characterizing the continuous expansion source, I have been working on projects related to the chemical physics of H3+: measuring its low-temperature nuclear-spin-dependent dissociative recombination rate with electrons, and studying the spin dependence of the H3+ + H2 chemical reaction in laboratory and interstellar plasmas.
